Becoming A Denim Tailor

Becoming A Denim Tailor

When I first started doing alterations there were so many thoughts surrounding it.. Honestly I had traumatized myself due to one bad experience at the cleaners! I ruined someone's jeans and had to replace them. One thing I can remember about this day in 2017.. I was mortified actually. Luckily Macy's had the exact same jeans so everything was ok.Ā

This is the type of situation that lots of us will go through in our beginning stages but my best piece of advice to you is to think of solutions rather than adding this problem to your list of problems and dwelling on it. Accidents happen and it's our duty to be proactive in fixing them.

In my first few months of going viral online fixing denim waistbands, I had a few clients that had many fittings and an OK outcome, not great. I also had a couple clients who had bad outcomes and no fittings to fix the issues which is not a great feeling. Im a perfectionist and I love to cover my tracks. If I made a mistake, ease my conscious and allow me to fix it. Many issues with denim waistband alterations are easily fixed for me. Some of the ones that aren't easily fixed are holes, cuts, and stains. BE CAREFUL.

But a simple misaligned middle seam, is easily fixed which is why I stress so much to Not make any other mistakes. Many mistakes are irreversible but just realigning the middle seam is such an easy fix.

If you're reading this before you've started working on your first denim alterations client, slow and steady wins the race. Don't wait until the last minute to do this kind of work. When I was starting out id do the pants the second the client left and get it out the way. of course once you start to receive a higher volume of orders you'll have to organize orders as received, but early on get them out of the way as soon as possible and do not wait until the last minute out of fear. I know how it can get.

Give yourself some time to mess up, and be gracious with yourself in this new journey of yours.
